How to migrate your service with minimum downtime

We often get inquiries about how to migrate a domain name, DNS as well email hosting with a minimum downtime. If you are in the same shoes, this blog will shed some light on what steps to take.

Dynu is one of the oldest dynamic DNS service and DNS hosting service providers as well as an ICANN-accredited domain name registrar. We support dynamic DNS service, DNS hosting, http redirect, DNSSEC and more. Our email service runs on multiple nodes and provides standard IMAP/SMTP connections, an easy-to-use webmail interface, whitelist/blacklist features and rules etc.

Unlike other providers that will convince you to purchase service first, we always tell our customers to migrate the DNS free of cost. DNS is the backbone of all services running behind a domain name and its smooth transfer is half of the work completed.

You can migrate the DNS in a few simple steps.

1
DNS migration

  • Sign up for a free account with your domain name here by using Option 2.
  • Compare the DNS records with the current provider and add the missing ones. Or use the 'Zone Import' option to import the DNS zone.
  • Change the name servers at your domain registrar to Dynu name servers and complete the migration.
  • Place a domain transfer order here if you'd like to transfer the domain as well.

2
Email migration

  • Sign up for full service email for your domain name and set up all the email accounts with the same password.
  • In your local IMAP/SMTP client, set up the same email account with Dynu IMAP/SMTP host as provided in the control panel.
  • Drag and drop messages from the old account to the new account. This way your old emails are migrated to our mail server.
  • Delete the old account from your email client and start using Dynu email service to send/receive emails.

One thing to note is that the support ticket can be tracked in the control panel's Support Tickets area, which will ensure that you have access to support in case your email is not accessible during migration.
